The Fijian government is set to engage with the Fiji Muslim League (FML) regarding the eviction of residents from the Nabua squatter settlement, which is home to around 1,000 individuals. Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, confirmed that discussions will focus on providing the residents adequate time for relocation instead of immediate eviction.
Nalumisa indicated that efforts are being made to arrange a meeting with the FML’s executives, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the welfare of the affected families. He acknowledged the need for the government to secure alternative land for the residents to move to.
Fiji Muslim League lawyer, Shelvin Singh, mentioned that the League has been proactive in discussions with the squatters alongside government officials. He noted that previous collaborations with the Ministry of Housing had taken place, wherein land identification and relocation efforts were underway. Singh pointed out that some individuals were reportedly renting out properties in the area while not utilizing them for residence.
Singh also urged the residents to begin the relocation process, highlighting that the land has been designated for development, supported by secured funding from the FML.
In addition, Minister of Lands Filimoni Vosarogo expressed readiness to assist the Ministry of Housing in identifying suitable land for the relocated families, demonstrating inter-ministerial cooperation for a smooth transition.
This situation presents an opportunity for improvement, as the government’s engagement with the FML shows a willingness to address housing issues thoughtfully and responsibly. By working collaboratively, the involved parties can create a solution that benefits both the displaced residents and future development.
In summary, the government of Fiji is actively seeking to manage the eviction of squatters in Nabua while ensuring their welfare is prioritized through planned relocation efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and compassionate governance.
