Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Fisheries and Forests, recently toured potential aquaculture pond sites located in Kadavu. This week, she visited areas in Tabuya and Solovola villages, which are part of the Nabukelevu District, to assess their viability for aquaculture development.
In addition to the pond site evaluations, the Minister also inspected a seaweed farm owned by local entrepreneur Maika Vunituraga in Cevai. Her visit to Kadavu began the previous week, where she engaged with government officials at the Vunisea Government Station. The tour concluded with a visit to the Kavala Fisheries Station, emphasizing the government’s commitment to exploring sustainable aquaculture opportunities for local communities.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of aquaculture not only as a source of food and income but also as a key element in the sustainable development of Fiji’s marine resources. The potential for enhanced aquaculture could contribute to food security and economic growth in the region.
Overall, the Minister’s involvement in these site visits demonstrates a proactive approach to fostering the local aquaculture industry, which could bring hope and positive change to the communities involved. The development of aquaculture will also support environmental sustainability by promoting responsible management of marine resources.
