Multi-Ethnic Affairs Minister Charan Jeath Singh has firmly dismissed accusations of favoritism following the allocation of substantial grant funding to the Northern Division for the 2024-2025 financial year. Singh, a Labasa native, addressed concerns regarding the apparent financial prioritization of his home region, stating, “I’m not being biased; don’t say that just because I’m from Labasa.”
During a recent event in which he handed over grants for multi-ethnic communities in the North, Singh highlighted that four new projects were recently approved, amounting to $54,000. When combined with 81 previously funded projects, the total grants allocated in this region reached $600,000, the highest of any division in the country. Singh noted that the ministry has disbursed a total of $1.475 million nationwide this fiscal year, with 312 applications received, out of which 202 were approved after thorough assessments by ministry staff, ensuring a transparent process.
In assuring the public of the integrity of the grant distribution process, Singh explained that some applications were unfortunately rejected due to incomplete documentation. Emphasizing the importance of electing the right representatives, he stated, “If you elect the right people, they’ll work hard to bring resources to your area. Don’t elect someone without a license.”
Singh’s commitment to the initiative underlines the government’s focus on fostering social cohesion among various ethnic communities in Fiji. Echoing sentiments from previous articles, he reaffirmed that these grants are not merely financial aids but essential tools aimed at easing hardships and enhancing community development. As such, the funding not only addresses immediate needs but also plays a role in building stronger ties among the ethnically diverse populations of Fiji, instilling hope for a more united and prosperous future.
The proactive measures and financial support from the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs signal an encouraging trend towards inclusivity and collaboration within the communities, allowing citizens from all backgrounds to contribute to and benefit from collective growth and development initiatives.
