Minister Defends Diaspora-Funded Fiji Day Trip Costs

Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya has addressed the costs associated with her recent trip for Fiji Day celebrations in South Australia, asserting that the bulk of her expenses were covered by the Fijian community rather than taxpayers. “The only cost to Government was the ticket upgrade and standard travel per diem, which is customary for ministers and officials,” Tabuya clarified.

Her remarks came in light of concerns regarding governmental spending when organizers claimed the celebrations were fully funded. She emphasized that her travel was officially sanctioned by the Prime Minister, marking a significant event as it was the first Fiji Day celebration held in regional South Australia.

Tabuya highlighted the economic contributions of PALM/NEC workers in the region, stating they remit millions back to Fiji, dwarfing the cost of her trip. “Their contribution to Fiji’s economy is hundreds of times more than the cost of this trip,” she noted, with national remittances estimated between $200 million and $250 million annually.

She also expressed gratitude to the Fijian community in Australia for their support and commitment, stating, “Vinaka vakalevu for funding my trip and hosting me with genuine love, respect, and unity.” Her visit was focused on connecting with workers, celebrating their contributions, and cultivating better relations between Fijians in Australia and their homeland.

This trip underscores the significance of maintaining connections with Fijians abroad, particularly as ministers engage with the diaspora. The initiative aligns with the broader goals of enhancing diplomatic ties and fostering economic growth, especially as discussions around governmental travel expenses continue in the context of fiscal responsibility. Promoting transparency and accountability in the usage of public funds remains crucial as Fiji navigates its economic landscape.

Overall, Tabuya’s efforts during Fiji Day celebrate not just cultural ties, but also emphasize the hopeful promise of ongoing collaboration and support between the Fijian government and its overseas communities.
