The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has vehemently denied accusations regarding his approach to consultations with the Mataqali Nabukebuke about mining operations conducted by the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV). Mr. Vosarogo clarified that he has actively engaged with the landowners, countering claims of neglect.

“I have met with Mataqali Nabukebuke and from that meeting, understood the depth of their concerns,” Mr. Vosarogo stated. He outlined his goal of considering their worries, juxtaposed with the importance of advancing the mineral sector for economic growth, job creation linked to NJV, and the social and economic impacts associated with the issuance of mining licenses.

The minister noted that he is waiting for Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Namosi, to return so that comprehensive discussions can take place. He emphasized, “It is not that I have not met with the landowners at all. That is factually incorrect and poor reporting.” Mr. Vosarogo mentioned his meetings at the Namosi Provincial Council Office and referenced the numerous letters of objection filed with the Department of Mineral Resources.

Furthermore, he criticized LAMA chairman Sipiriano Nariva, suggesting that Nariva prioritizes activism over understanding local protocols. He underlined the legitimacy of government consultations, which respect the recognized vanua and iTaukei structures.

Mr. Vosarogo reiterated the current government’s effort to provide opportunities for dialogue that were not offered under the previous administration. He affirmed his commitment to balancing development with the landowners’ concerns, promising continued and respectful consultations.

This situation conveys a positive commitment from the minister to engage constructively with local communities, which is crucial for fostering trust and collaboration in the region’s development initiatives. Building strong relationships between the government and landowners can lead to more effective outcomes in resource management and economic growth.

Summary: Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has defended his engagement with Mataqali Nabukebuke regarding the Namosi Joint Venture, asserting that he has met with landowners and is committed to addressing their concerns while promoting economic development. He criticized claims of neglect and emphasized the importance of respectful consultations moving forward.
