The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has firmly dismissed allegations regarding his approach to consultations with the Mataqali Nabukebuke about mining operations by the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV). He stated that claims of neglect are unfounded, emphasizing his active engagement with the landowners.

“I have met with Mataqali Nabukebuke and from that meeting, understood the depth of their concerns,” stated Mr. Vosarogo. He expressed his intent to listen to their grievances while balancing the need for mineral sector development and the potential for job creation through NJV, as well as the socio-economic impact related to mining licenses.

The minister highlighted his decision to wait for the return of Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Namosi, to facilitate comprehensive discussions. He categorically refuted claims that he had not met with the landowners, citing meetings held at the Namosi Provincial Council Office and discussions of their numerous objections documented with the Department of Mineral Resources.

Mr. Vosarogo also took aim at LAMA chairman Sipiriano Nariva, criticizing him for allegedly prioritizing activist agendas over understanding local protocols. He raised concerns about LAMA’s legitimacy and reaffirmed that the government conducts consultations in line with recognized iTaukei and vanua structures.

The minister concluded by reiterating his commitment to fostering dialogue and ensuring that landowner concerns are integrated into the development process, which he believes was lacking under the previous administration.

This assertion from the minister reflects an ongoing commitment to improving communication and collaboration with landowners, aiming for a more inclusive approach to resource development. By prioritizing consultations and actively engaging with stakeholders, there is potential for a more sustainable and mutually beneficial strategy in managing Fiji’s mineral resources.

In summary, Minister Vosarogo is determined to enhance dialogue with local landowners while balancing economic development priorities, indicating a positive step towards better governance and community relations in the mining sector.
