The Minister responsible for the Land Transport Authority, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has urged the agency to prioritize the apprehension of drunk and speeding drivers instead of focusing on penalizing bus passengers. In a recent social media post, which was also shared by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Tuisawau emphasized that bus passengers should be left unharmed by fines or penalties.

This directive comes in the wake of a viral video showing LTA officers issuing a $150 fine to a woman in Rakiraki, who was penalized for not carrying a bus card during her travel. The existing regulations outline that individuals failing to present a bus card when required may be fined.

In light of Ro Tuisawau’s comments, there is a renewed focus on ensuring safety on the roads, indicating a shift in enforcement priorities. This could lead to a more supportive approach for public transport users and a concerted effort to curb dangerous driving behaviors, potentially enhancing overall road safety for everyone.

This response seems to reflect a growing recognition of the need to support public transportation while ensuring that dangerous driving is addressed decisively—hoping to create a safer environment for all commuters.
