The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has stated that no mining licenses will be issued until the current Mining Act undergoes a thorough review. This clarification was provided in response to concerns raised by landowners regarding the government’s existing mining plans. Vosarogo indicated that the government is focusing on the Special Prospecting License (SPL) rather than moving forward with mining activities, which require cabinet approval.

Vosarogo noted that the 11th draft of the revised Mining Act is nearing completion and will soon be presented to the cabinet for review. Subsequently, it will go through public consultation to gather various stakeholder inputs. It is important to mention that the SPL, which is currently up for renewal, has been on hold since 2023.

Discussions between the government and Namosi landowners will continue, as these engagements are vital for addressing concerns about the Namosi Joint Venture and its Special Prospecting License 1420. The ministry aims to maintain open dialogue with local communities, recognizing the tensions stemming from environmental concerns and past grievances related to mining in the area.

This approach reflects a growing understanding within the government about the need to balance development with the interests of local communities. Increased engagement with landowners provides an opportunity for both sides to collaborate, addressing the needs for economic development while respecting the rights and concerns of the landowners.

Overall, the proactive stance taken by the Minister could lead to more sustainable practices and a clearer pathway toward mutual understanding in resource management, fostering a positive relationship between the government and local communities.
