A British Army soldier has been discharged from the military and sentenced to 12 months in civilian prison after being found guilty of voyeurism. Guardsman Meli Gaunavinaka Cama, aged 35, recorded videos of a female colleague engaged in a sexual encounter without her consent while stationed in Oman for a training exercise in November 2023.
According to court proceedings at Catterick Military Court in North Yorkshire, Cama climbed the exterior of an accommodation block three times, capturing a total of 11 minutes of footage. He later shared these recordings with fellow soldiers, which caused significant distress to the female victim. After being confronted with the footage, she was reportedly “distraught” and fled from Cama.
Cama attempted to justify his actions by claiming he was concerned for the woman’s consent due to hearing noises, but this defense was dismissed by the court. The judge characterized his conduct as “unconscionable,” highlighting the violation of privacy and trust inherent in his actions. Cama’s intoxication during the incident further emphasized his poor judgement, though the court noted that the act of climbing to record was a deliberate choice.
This case illustrates the severe consequences of violating the rights and dignity of individuals, reinforcing the military’s commitment to maintaining standards of conduct. The victim’s experience has left her feeling altered and traumatized, showing the lasting impact of such violations. Moving forward, it is crucial for institutions to prioritize education on consent and respect to foster safer environments for all.
The emphasis on accountability serves as a hopeful reminder that actions have consequences and highlights the importance of consent in all interactions.
