Military Drills or Real Danger? Fiji’s Safety Under Scrutiny

Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has addressed public concerns regarding reports of gunshots, which originated from a video circulated on social media. Although he has not yet viewed the footage himself, Tikoduadua acknowledges that this is the first he has heard about the incident and plans to gather more information.

The video in question features two individuals firing blank shots in an undisclosed residential area, drawing significant alarm from the public, as residents were seen watching the scene unfold. Tikoduadua noted that live firing exercises are regularly conducted in certain areas, but he emphasized that safety is a top priority in such operations.

He plans to consult with Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), to understand the situation better and ascertain whether proper protocols were followed during the exercise. Tikoduadua expressed his commitment to addressing the community’s concerns after reviewing the findings.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reassured the public, asserting that there is no cause for alarm. He clarified that the video was related to a sanctioned military drill, which was advised to the public in advance through a notice from the RFMF. The military had informed people living near locations such as the Nausori Highlands, Bukuya, Narere, Nakasi, and Davuilevu to avoid these areas during the training conducted on the specified dates.

The incident serves as an important reminder about the significance of clear communication from authorities, especially during public safety concerns. Authorities are encouraging the community to engage with verified information and remain calm. As they continue their training exercises, the concerted efforts from law enforcement and military agencies are crucial in fortifying public trust and ensuring community safety.

This proactive response from the government and police fosters a spirit of collaboration, reinforcing that both citizens and authorities play essential roles in maintaining safety and addressing misinformation. Community vigilance and cooperation are key to ensuring a secure environment for everyone in Fiji.
