In April 2000, Milika Tuivanuavou was poised to make her mark in history as a representative for Queensland at the Pacific School Games, set to take place in Sydney. A young athlete from Nairai in Fiji’s Lomaiviti Group, Milika and her family had recently returned to Fiji after spending two years in Brisbane, where she expressed her desire to compete for Australia rather than her native Fiji.
At just nine years old, she was already a standout competitor, demonstrating remarkable talent in athletics. She was recognized as the athletics champion of her age group at Indooroopilly State Primary School and received a special accolade for being the sole student to qualify for the prestigious games. In addition to her achievements, Milika was a part of the Metropolitan West Primary Schools track and field team which participated in the Queensland Championship the prior year. There, she secured a commendable second place in the 100m final, clocking in at 14.19 seconds, contributed to her relay team’s gold medal win, and surprised onlookers by finishing second in shot put against older competitors.
Milika’s accomplishments earned her the opportunity to represent Queensland, supported by her father, Jope Tuivanuavou, who arranged for her to train with a personal coach from Queensland University. After undergoing two years of training and utilizing excellent sports facilities, Milika felt that returning to her roots in Fiji felt like stepping back in time. She attended Veiuto Primary before relocating to Australia with her family while her mother, Silika, pursued further education at Queensland University.
Despite the transition back home, Milika expressed enthusiasm about her upcoming competition for Queensland, acknowledging the challenges of strong training and competitive environments but highlighting her enjoyment of the process. Meanwhile, her brother, Eroni, was also gaining recognition, having been selected for the Australian elite exchange team which toured the U.S. for competition and exposure—a testament to their family’s athletic prowess.
Milika was expected to undergo a one-week training camp in Brisbane in preparation for the Pacific School Games, emphasizing her commitment and dedication to the sport. The games were scheduled to take place at Homebush Stadium in Sydney, a venue that would witness the talents of young athletes from across the region.
Milika’s journey represents the spirit of youth and potential, showing how determination, training, and support can lead to remarkable achievements on the global stage.
Overall, it’s inspiring to see such young talent thriving and choosing to embrace the challenges ahead, setting the foundation for future success in athletics.
