Papua New Guinea has reached a monumental milestone in healthcare with its first successful kidney transplant performed on May 14. The procedure took place at the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and was led by Dr. Damien Hasola, a prominent kidney surgeon from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
A healthy kidney was transplanted from a living donor, and the patient was taken into surgery shortly after. By early the next day, the recipient had begun producing urine, a positive indication that the new kidney was functioning properly. This accomplishment not only marks a significant development in surgical capabilities within the country but also means that patients in Papua New Guinea can now undergo life-saving kidney transplants locally, avoiding the high costs associated with overseas procedures, which can reach around K500,000 (US$120,000). The Health Minister, Elias Kapavore, stated that the cost for such procedures within the country will be significantly reduced to less than 10,000 kina (US$2,416).
This achievement is the culmination of over seven years of efforts to establish kidney transplant services in PNG, aided by the approval of the National Surgical, Obstetrics, and Anesthetic Policy. This policy, which outlines comprehensive operational procedures, was critical in laying the groundwork for this milestone. Dr. Hasola, who has been a driving force in the development of kidney transplant services, described the occurrence as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
