Fiji’s oldest and largest indigenous women’s organization, the Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei (SSV), is set to celebrate its 100-year anniversary on Thursday, November 7. This significant milestone marks a century dedicated to empowering indigenous women across the nation.

The organization reflected on its rich history and the vital role it has played in promoting the health and well-being of its members. Acknowledging the contributions of volunteers throughout its existence, the SSV emphasizes the strength and resilience of its members. President Adi Finau Tabakacoro highlighted the organization’s future goals, aiming for self-sustainability to enhance wealth creation for its members. She indicated that amendments to the constitution could instigate “new beginnings,” allowing the SSV to engage in business ventures.

Importantly, the SSV will continue to advocate for the needs and interests of indigenous peoples, representing its 200,000 members spread across 14 provinces, 189 districts, and 1,192 villages.

The anniversary celebration will take place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, promising a heartfelt event commemorating a century of achievements and looking ahead to future opportunities for growth and empowerment.

This celebration not only honors a significant past but also inspires a hopeful future where the voices of indigenous women are increasingly heard and valued. The SSV stands as a beacon of resilience and progress in the community.
