Mike Friday Steps Down: A Decade of Transformation in USA Rugby Sevens

Mike Friday has announced his departure as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a remarkable ten-year period. The 52-year-old former England sevens player, who took the position in 2014, has decided to leave following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

During his tenure, Friday led the USA team through three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments. When he assumed control of the team, their chances for Olympic qualification were quite limited.

Friday informed the players and staff of his decision to step down at the start of the 2024 season. He reflected on his initial challenges, describing it as taking over a program that was “all but done,” a challenge he embraced fully.

“The journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” he stated. “All good things must come to an end. After ten years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones,” he added.

As Friday prepares for new opportunities and more family time, his impact on the team and American rugby sevens will be remembered.
