Mike Friday has announced his resignation as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a notable ten-year period in charge. The 52-year-old former England sevens player decided to step down following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.
Friday assumed the role in 2014, during a time when the USA team had limited prospects for Olympic qualification. Throughout his tenure, the team competed in three Olympic Games and participated in two Rugby World Cup Sevens. He communicated his intention to leave to the players and staff at the onset of the 2024 season.
Reflecting on his time with the team, Friday remarked that he embraced the challenge of taking over a program “that was all but done.” He expressed pride in being part of a journey characterized by many highs and lows.
He stated, “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones.” As he prepares for new opportunities and more family time, Friday’s impact on the USA men’s sevens team and American rugby is clear.
