Mike Friday Steps Down: A Decade of Change in USA Rugby Sevens

Mike Friday has officially announced his resignation as the head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a significant ten-year period. The 52-year-old former England sevens player has decided to step down following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

Since taking charge in 2014, Friday guided the USA team through participation in three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments. When he began his tenure, the team had minimal prospects for Olympic qualification, making the journey particularly challenging.

He communicated his intentions to leave to the players and staff at the start of the 2024 season. Reflecting on his time with the team, Friday noted that he took on a program that was “all but done” and embraced the challenge that lay ahead.

“The journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” Friday expressed. He added, “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones.”

As Friday prepares for new opportunities and more family time, his impact on the team and American rugby sevens will not be forgotten.
