Mike Friday has announced his resignation as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a remarkable ten-year tenure. The 52-year-old, who is a former England sevens player, took over in 2014 and made the decision to step down following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.
During his time in charge, Friday led the USA team through three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments. When he first took on the role, the team had limited chances for Olympic qualification, but he embraced the challenge.
Friday informed the players and staff of his decision at the start of the 2024 season, expressing his pride in the program’s journey, which he characterized as a series of ups and downs. He stated, “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones.”
As he moves on to new opportunities and focuses on family, Friday’s impact on the team and American rugby sevens will be felt for years to come.
