Mike Friday has announced his resignation as head coach of the US men’s sevens rugby team after a decade of impactful leadership. The 52-year-old, who previously played for England’s sevens team, took over the coaching role in 2014. His decision to step down follows the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games held in Paris.
During his tenure, Friday led the USA team through three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments. When he assumed the position, the team faced considerable challenges in securing Olympic qualification.
Friday informed the players and coaching staff of his decision at the start of the 2024 season. He reflected on his initial journey with the program, stating it was “all but done,” which he embraced as a challenge.
“This journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” he noted. He emphasized that “all good things must come to an end” and expressed a desire to step back to dedicate more time to his family and loved ones.
As he prepares for the next chapter in his life, Friday’s impact on American rugby sevens and the team’s development remains significant.
