Mike Friday has announced his departure as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a significant ten-year tenure. The 52-year-old, who previously played for England’s sevens team, took over the USA program in 2014 and has chosen to step down following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.
During his time as head coach, Friday led the USA team through three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens. When he first took charge, the team’s chances of qualifying for the Olympics were quite slim.
He communicated his decision to leave to the players and staff at the beginning of the 2024 season. Reflecting on his journey, Friday described the program he inherited as “all but done,” but welcomed the challenge.
“The journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” he stated. “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones,” the former coach added.
As he looks ahead to new opportunities and more family time, Friday’s impact on the team and American rugby sevens is recognized and will be missed.
