Mike Friday has announced his departure as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after an impactful ten years in the role. The 52-year-old, a former England sevens player, has decided to step down following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.
During his tenure, Friday led the USA team through three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments. When he took charge in 2014, the team was struggling with their prospects for Olympic qualification.
Friday informed the players and staff of his planned departure at the start of the 2024 season. He reflected on his journey with the team, describing it as a program “that was all but done” when he began, embracing the challenge eagerly.
“The journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” he expressed. “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones,” he added.
As Friday anticipates embarking on new projects and cherishing family time, his impact on the team and American rugby sevens will be remembered.
