Mike Friday Bids Farewell: A Decade of Transformative Rugby Leadership

Mike Friday has announced his resignation as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team after a transformative ten-year tenure. At 52, the former England sevens player joined the team in 2014 and has decided to step down following the squad’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

During his time in charge, the USA team competed in three Olympic Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens. When Friday took over, the team faced significant challenges in Olympic qualification.

He shared his decision to depart with the players and staff at the beginning of the 2024 season. Reflecting on his journey, Friday described taking over a program that was on the verge of collapse and embraced the challenge.

“It’s been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been part of it,” he stated. “All good things must come to an end. After ten years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones,” the outgoing coach said.

As Friday looks ahead to new opportunities and more time with his family, his impact on the team and American rugby sevens will be lasting.
