Employers in Fiji are reportedly issuing fake skill certificates to migrant workers, as revealed by the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission during a recent workshop. Mithleshni Gurdayal, a representative from the commission, emphasized that many migrant workers are unaware of these fraudulent practices, which mislead them into believing they possess qualifications for jobs they cannot perform.

She highlighted cases where employers request specific trades, such as tile layers or mechanics, without actually verifying the workers’ skills. Inquiries with the affected workers often reveal that they were assured by recruiters of their capabilities based on the bogus certificates. Gurdayal emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into these recruitment practices, indicating that some local recruiters may also be complicit.

Additionally, the workshop shed light on the alarming trend of employers confiscating migrant workers’ passports. This practice further exemplifies a troubling pattern of control and exploitation, which sometimes leads to situations resembling human trafficking. Gurdayal noted that previous media campaigns have helped reduce passport confiscation incidents, indicating the effectiveness of raising awareness about these rights violations.

This situation reflects broader concerns raised by the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission regarding the treatment of migrant workers, aligning with previous declarations from the chairperson, Pravesh Sharma. He has highlighted how the illegal retention of passports and inadequate living conditions often leave migrant workers vulnerable.

The commission’s actions may pave the way for necessary reforms that can significantly improve working conditions and protect the rights of migrant workers in Fiji. Raising awareness among both employees and employers is crucial in fostering a more equitable work environment. With the right actions and collective support from stakeholders, there is hope for enhanced treatment of migrant workers, enabling them to contribute positively to both their families and the Fijian economy.
