The chairperson of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, Pravesh Sharma, has declared it illegal for companies in Fiji to retain the passports of migrant workers. Sharma pointed out a troubling trend, noting a rising number of complaints from these workers who, in some instances, have been abandoned on the streets due to disputes with employers.

In an interview with The Fiji Times’ online platform, Sharma emphasized that both the 2013 Constitution of Fiji and various international agreements to which Fiji is a signatory safeguard the rights of migrant workers and their families. He highlighted that workers brought into Fiji are vulnerable to being discarded when conflicts arise with their employers.

Sharma expressed concern over the practice of employers confiscating passports, stating, “No one should hold anyone’s passport. The passport should be with the person who owns it.” He acknowledged that withholding a passport serves as a means of control, preventing workers from leaving the country or seeking employment elsewhere.

Common grievances reported by migrant workers often revolve around inadequate housing, unpaid wages, and poor living conditions. Sharma reassured that the FHRADC is proactive in addressing these complaints, and most issues are resolved through negotiation with employers. He also noted the significant role that the earnings of migrant workers play in supporting families in their home countries.

This highlights a critical issue within the labor market in Fiji, reminding us of the importance of protecting workers’ rights and well-being. By addressing these injustices, we can work towards ensuring that migrant workers are treated with dignity, allowing them to thrive and contribute positively to both their families and the Fijian economy.

In summary, the FHRADC is actively advocating for the rights of migrant workers and pushing for a supportive environment that respects their needs and legal rights.
