A significant drug bust occurred in Tavua last week, leading to the arrest of several individuals and raising concerns about drug trafficking in Fiji. The incident unfolded on a dramatic midnight when police intercepted a vehicle believed to be transporting illicit drugs. During the operation, one suspect, an iTaukei man reportedly in his 20s, sustained injuries while attempting to evade capture and was subsequently hospitalized.

According to sources, the police initially attempted to stop a red single-cab Toyota Hilux as it made its way from the Vatia wharf. When the vehicle failed to comply, officers strategically blocked the path, bringing it to a halt. However, the passenger fled on foot, resulting in a struggle before law enforcement could detain him. The driver, identified as an Indo-Fijian man in his 30s, also resisted arrest and was taken into custody.

Upon examining the Hilux, police discovered approximately 10 sacks in the back tray, believed to contain illegal substances. Further investigations led authorities to the Vatia wharf, where they encountered a speedboat carrying four foreign nationals, all Ecuadorian passport holders. Close to 100 additional sacks of suspected drugs were found on the boat, with the occupants ranging in age from their 30s to 50s.

Authorities have actively pursued this case, and the police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, has stated that further details will be released once the investigation concludes. This operation underscores the ongoing challenges related to drug trafficking in the region, as well as the proactive measures taken by law enforcement to combat the issue. With each successful interception, the hope remains that Fiji can further crack down on illegal drug trade, making strides toward ensuring community safety.
