Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has come to the defense of winger Epeli Momo following social media backlash regarding his performance with the Fijian Drua and the national team. Critics have questioned Momo’s place in the starting lineup.
In an interview, Byrne highlighted Momo’s rapid development as a strong winger. “What I’ve learned about being in Fiji is that it doesn’t take much for some people to start criticizing,” he said. “Those in the rugby community recognize that Momo is giving his all, and we are working diligently with him.”
Momo spent three years playing as a forward for French club Montauban in the ProD2 competition before transitioning to wing. Byrne emphasized the successful shift that Momo has made from flanker to wing since joining the Fijian Drua. “He played in the flank in France, and we’ve given him a chance to grow on the wing. He’s made significant progress in a brief period, and we fully support Epeli for what he’s done for this team.”
Byrne acknowledged that criticism is part of the sport. “Critics are everywhere. What is important is that those around Momo understand how hard he works and what he contributes,” he stated. “We’re fully behind him and there’s no need for harsh judgment after just one game.”
Momo will not feature in the Match 23 squad for tonight’s Pacific Nations Cup grand final against Japan in Osaka, being replaced by Ilaisa Droasese, with Ponipate Loganimase included on the bench. Despite this, Byrne believes Momo is a talented player capable of making a strong recovery.
In related news, Flying Fijians captain Tevita Ikanivere expressed the team’s confidence heading into the final against Japan. He noted that clarity from recent training sessions has prepared them well for the match. “There’s always pressure, and it’s good to be challenging ourselves at this level,” he remarked.
Ikanivere looks forward to leading the squad in his first PNC final as captain, underscoring their focus on executing the game plan. The match is set to kick off at 10:05 PM.
