Michael J. Fox recently shared his reflections on his earlier work in the 1985 film “Teen Wolf” while promoting his new memoir, “Future Boy,” which focuses on the making of the iconic “Back to the Future.” Though “Teen Wolf” came out shortly after “Back to the Future,” Fox humorously recalls feeling overshadowed by the latter’s immense success, which dominated the box office and became the highest-grossing film of the year.
In “Future Boy,” Fox candidly discusses his experiences on the set of “Teen Wolf,” revealing that while filming, he felt somewhat diminished by the production compared to his later collaboration on “Back to the Future,” which was helmed by notable figures like Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. Throughout the memoir, Fox explains a memorable incident on the “Teen Wolf” set, where he jokingly expressed feeling like a “whore” when asked to pose with a chocolate bar for marketing purposes. This light-hearted self-deprecation underscores his awareness of the film’s status compared to his other projects.
Despite its lower critical acclaim, “Teen Wolf” was a commercial success, grossing approximately $80 million against a modest $4 million budget. Fox attributes the course of his career changing significantly after “Back to the Future,” which began filming after he had already started on “Teen Wolf” and introduced him in a leading role that shaped his future in Hollywood.
Interestingly, Fox notes that he only pursued “Teen Wolf” because it conveniently fit into his schedule while filming “Family Ties.” His agent sent him the script at a time when the quick production timeline seemed ideal. Surprisingly, “Teen Wolf” turned out to be a significant milestone in his career, spawning a reimagined series on MTV that helped launch the careers of several actors, including Tyler Posey.
Fox’s reflections not only celebrate the legacy of “Back to the Future” but also recognize the surprising paths that lead to cinematic fame. The memoir invites readers to appreciate both the successes and the quirky moments that define the experiences of filmmakers and actors. Ultimately, these stories remind fans of the unpredictability of Hollywood, highlighting resilience, nostalgia, and the intertwining of various creative journeys.
