Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School sprinter Lydia Waqairapoa has recently completed a significant chapter in her athletics career, participating in her final inter-house competition as she turns her focus towards the upcoming zone meet and the highly regarded Coca-Cola Games.
The reigning champion in the Intermediate Girls 100 meters, Waqairapoa reflects on the inter-house meet as a pivotal milestone. This event not only marked her last participation at the inter-house level but also her initiation into the senior grade. Since joining MGM in 2023, Waqairapoa has become a central figure in the school’s athletics program, particularly in the blue ribbon event.
Waqairapoa attributes her success to the unwavering support of her family and teachers. She expresses gratitude for their encouragement, which continues to motivate her toward achieving her ambitions. “All the teachers have continuously encouraged me to work towards the blue ribbon event this year. I will try my very best to qualify and make my school proud. I believe we are able to defend the girls’ title this year; we just have to work closely with our sub-juniors who are new to the games. I am confident we can retain the girls’ division title this year,” she asserts.
She also acknowledges that the challenges she has encountered along the way have contributed to her growth and better equipped her for the challenges that lie ahead. With inter-house competition wrapped up, MGM is now shifting their focus to fine-tuning preparations for the zone competition and subsequently aiming to defend their title at the Coca-Cola Games.
Waqairapoa’s journey illustrates resilience and determination, promising an exciting season ahead for her and her team.
