MGM Girls Futsal Team Shines Bright at Championship Kickoff!

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School’s under-16 girls’ futsal team is off to a remarkable start at the Extra Supermarket Fiji Southern Secondary Schools Futsal Championship 2025, winning both of their opening matches. In their inaugural tournament, MGM narrowly defeated Vunimono High School with a score of 2-1 and followed up with a convincing 2-0 victory against International Secondary School at the Fiji Football Academy in Vatuwaqa.

“We are still developing, but I think we are doing well,” commented MGM’s head coach, Chrishant Gounder, as this marks the first time a girls’ team from MGM has participated in futsal competition. Despite limited preparation and challenges in maintaining regular training sessions, the team, composed of mostly ninth and tenth graders, has shown great promise and adaptability.

The eagerness of the players to play is evident, yet learning to focus on structured training sessions remains a challenge. Gounder expressed the importance of improving the team’s training consistency, which he believes will bolster their future performance.

Looking ahead, MGM is preparing for their next game against Suva Muslim College U16, aiming to extend their unbeaten run. “Our aim is to focus on our play, our style, and to win,” Gounder stated, showcasing the team’s determination to advance further in the competition.

This positive start for MGM’s girls’ team aligns well with the growing interest in futsal among schools in Fiji, where the championship aims to nurture young talent while promoting active lifestyles and teamwork. With the ongoing support from the Fiji Football Association and the community, the future looks bright for MGM as they pursue their goals in this exciting tournament.
