The President of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, Reverend Dr. Semesa Turagavou, has announced a new partnership with the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) aimed at tackling pressing national issues. Reverend Turagavou stated that this collaboration is essential for the church, which has a congregation of 186,865 members, to effectively communicate its vision and address societal challenges facing Fiji.
In his statement, he emphasized, “The church can’t do it alone. We want to be the voice of God to the nation, and through your assistance, we can make a difference.” Currently, the Methodist Church broadcasts a program every Sunday evening, but under the terms of the new agreement, they will expand their reach with an additional program titled “Na Vosa Ni Kalou,” which will air every Sunday morning starting March 2.
Gurjeet Singh, FBC’s Business Relationships Manager, praised the Methodist Church for its commitment to addressing critical social issues such as domestic violence, drug abuse, and rape, and expressed pride in partnering with the church, the largest Christian denomination in the country. Singh noted that through this partnership, FBC aims to contribute meaningfully to nation-building efforts as these issues have significantly impacted the nation.
This initiative builds on Reverend Turagavou’s previous calls for the church’s involvement in critical conversations addressing social challenges, including drug-related issues and community welfare. He has consistently echoed the need for unity among the church, the community (vanua), and the government to effectively address these concerns.
The renewed commitment to outreach through media serves not only as a platform for spiritual guidance but also as a vital resource for promoting social well-being throughout Fiji. This partnership promises a hopeful future where the Method Church can actively participate in shaping the discourse around pressing issues, signaling a proactive evolution in their role as community leaders.
In summary, this partnership between the Methodist Church and FBC represents a strategic move to enhance community engagement and address significant social issues, highlighting the church’s vision to be a proactive and unified voice in the face of adversity in Fiji.
