The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has expressed its support for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative aims to promote healing and strengthen unity within the military and the wider community, reflecting a commitment to communal growth and national development.
Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of the programme. He stated, “We are supporting it, particularly in light of the military’s ongoing efforts. They presented the programme to both the President and myself, and we discussed the latest updates.”
Reverend Lasawa also commended the government for its initiative to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are in favor of the concept of truth and reconciliation that the government is pursuing, and we have appointed one of our representatives to participate,” he said.
The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is engaging with a range of stakeholders, including civil society leaders, faith organizations, political parties, and media groups, to refine the draft legal framework for the Commission.
Chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, the committee aims to develop the legal, governance, and financial structure for the Commission. The chairperson will provide direct reports to the Prime Minister.
