Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has announced that discussions are ongoing regarding the procedures for the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine currently held by law enforcement. This substantial drug haul was seized in January 2024, and just last month, the High Court in Lautoka granted permission for its destruction.

Mr. Fong Chew emphasized that the planning stage involves determining the exact manner and location for the destruction. “Once we receive confirmation from the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and an endorsement from the court, we will be able to disclose the timing and venue for this process,” he noted.

The Lautoka High Court has set a trial date for April 2025, deeming the transportation of such a large quantity of drugs from Nasinu to Lautoka as both impractical and unnecessary for the proceedings. The court has mandated strict protocols for the destruction, including the requirement to document the process via video and submit this footage to the court for oversight.

This process of destruction not only highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in the fight against drug trafficking but also ensures accountability in handling such significant drug seizures. With proper checks in place, the community can have confidence that the justice system is taking appropriate measures to combat drug-related issues.

In summary, as discussions continue on the logistics of destroying the seized methamphetamine, it is a crucial step forward in maintaining public safety and upholding the law. The collaboration between the police, the court, and the ODPP signifies a unified stance against drug-related crimes, reinforcing the commitment to combatting these challenges effectively.
