Former Fijian Broadcasting Corporation board member and renowned news editor Mesake Koroi was remembered fondly at his funeral service held at Samabula East Church in Nabua. Despite lacking a formal degree, Koroi earned admiration throughout his career for his profound communication skills and adherence to the principles of responsible journalism.
The service was attended by family, friends, and peers who came together to commemorate Koroi’s significant contributions to the media industry. His son-in-law, Robert Wolfgramm, depicted Koroi as a fearless and principled individual who championed justice, drawing parallels to celebrated figures such as Karl Marx for his sense of justice and Mother Teresa for his care for the impoverished. Known for his humor and willingness to challenge norms, Koroi’s legacy was painted as one filled with integrity and compassion.
Hailing from Vanua Balavu, the same island as the late Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, Koroi was deeply committed to his community, actively participating in village and land affairs. His dedication to leadership was widely recognized and respected.
The eulogies at the service highlighted his admirable traits as an inclusive and generous figure in both his community and professional life. Local musician Saimone Vuatalevu described Koroi as a person who united others through storytelling, fostering a sense of community.
Koroi embarked on his journalism career as a cadet at The Fiji Times, later advancing to roles such as News Editor and General Manager at the Daily Post. Additionally, he was involved in public relations with the Fiji Police Force and held a position on the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation board. His career spanned several decades, marked by significant contributions to national discourse.
His grandchildren, many of whom traveled from overseas to attend his funeral, spoke of him as a devoted and loving figure in their lives. The family emphasized how his life embodied hard work, service, and courage.
Koroi’s legacy is set to endure not only through the impact he had on journalism but also in the stories he shared and the values he upheld. His meaningful contributions to both his profession and community illustrate the lasting impact one can have through dedication and passion.
