The rugby league community is in mourning following the death of Fijian international and former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs junior Mesake “Mes” Ravonu. The young athlete passed away at the age of 22 after a protracted struggle with kidney disease.

Ravonu’s promising career was abruptly halted when he was forced to retire from professional rugby league in 2024 upon being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Despite his health challenges, he was able to represent the Fiji Bati team at the 2023 Pacific Championships, where he showcased his talent on an international platform.

Ravonu was part of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs’ 2023 Jersey Flegg premiership squad and made an impressive debut for the Fiji Bati during the same year. His journey began with the Bulldogs in 2022, although it was marred by serious injuries that impacted his debut season. Nevertheless, his tenacity and determination led to his selection for the national team, a significant achievement he and his family cherished.

After making progress to the Bulldogs’ NSW Cup squad in 2024, Ravonu’s career took another turn when he received his diagnosis of IgA Nephropathy, an autoimmune kidney disease, leading to his early retirement. In his last days, he returned to his hometown of Malawai in Nadi, Fiji, to be with family.

The Bulldogs organization expressed their deep sadness regarding Ravonu’s passing in a heartfelt statement. They praised his exceptional athletic promise from a young age and recognized his contributions to the Fijian National Under-18 Schoolboys and Under-20 Rugby Union teams. The Bulldogs family reflected on Mesake’s joyful spirit, infectious smile, and the indelible mark he left on those who knew him. The club extended its thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this challenging time.

The legacy of Mesake Ravonu will continue to inspire those within the rugby community, as his resilience and determination exemplified the spirit of rugby league.
