Meryl Streep, celebrated for her remarkable ability to memorize lines, reminded fans that even the most talented actors rely on cue cards during their performances. This revelation came during her recent appearance on Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special, where she played the mother of Kate McKinnon’s character in the much-loved “Close Encounter” sketch.

Mikey Day, an SNL cast member and one of the sketch’s writers, shared insights from behind the scenes during an episode of the Hey Dude… The 90s Called! podcast. Day explained that he found himself urging Streep to abandon her instinctual habit of memorizing lines, reassuring her, “There’s cards.” He pointed out the irony in guiding an actress of Streep’s caliber away from her natural instincts that have defined her legendary career.

In “Close Encounter,” McKinnon portrayed Colleen Rafferty, a woman humorously abducted by meddlesome aliens, a sketch that Day has co-written over the years. The episode was especially significant for McKinnon, who expressed how fulfilling it was to share the stage with Streep, a dream come true for her. Day also mentioned that filmmaker Steven Spielberg was scheduled to appear in the sketch but was ultimately cut due to time limitations.

Streep’s portrayal, which featured her adding a distinct comedic flavor as a nonchalant, chain-smoking mother, was hailed as surreal, displaying the legendary actress’s versatility even in a comedic setting. Streep’s involvement in SNL reinforces the show’s enduring appeal and its ability to connect with both audiences and iconic figures in the entertainment industry.

This delightful sketch serves as a reminder of the collaborative spirit in comedy, highlighting how even seasoned professionals can still rely on teamwork in shared performances. With such moments, SNL continues to flourish, presenting opportunities for new collaborations while honoring the legacy of its storied past. The show’s approach to combining humorous content with guest appearances illustrates a dynamic that keeps audiences engaged and entertained, blending nostalgia with fresh creativity.
