Mercy Granted: President Pardons Convicts in Landmark Decision

The Mercy Commission convened on September 18, 2024, to review mercy petitions from several individuals, including Sekina Vosavakatini, Nioni Tagici, James Sanjesh Goundar, Adi Livini Radininausori, John Miller, George Speight, and Shane Stevens.

Following their deliberations, the Commission recommended clemency, leading to His Excellency, the President of Fiji, granting pardons to all petitioners in accordance with Section 119(5) of the Constitution. These pardons were officially issued on September 18, 2024.

Consequently, those named were released from custody on September 19, 2024. However, the pardon for James Sanjesh Goundar, who died on September 6 while incarcerated at the Minimum Corrections Center, came too late for him.

The Fiji Correction Service and the government emphasize their dedication to justice, rehabilitation, and the rule of law, recognizing the important role of the Mercy Commission in carefully evaluating clemency petitions based on individual circumstances.
