Mental Health Becomes a Cornerstone of Cancer Care at Labasa Hospital Amid Disasters

The Labasa Hospital has issued a crucial reminder about the need for mental health support for cancer patients, especially during disasters that can disrupt access to care and emotional wellbeing. Internal Medicine Registrar Dr. Moala Tuiketei emphasized that mental health support is essential in helping these patients cope not only with their illness but also with the trauma and stress associated with emergencies such as natural disasters and pandemics. He asserted that mental health care should be viewed as a necessity rather than a luxury.

Dr. Tuiketei stated, “When we support their emotional wellbeing, we improve their ability to cope with treatment and increase their chances of survival.” This statement underscores the importance of integrating mental health services into cancer care, particularly in challenging times.

Meanwhile, Labasa Hospital’s Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Saiasi Caginidaveta, noted that while cancer can induce fear, it can also reveal the resilience, courage, and unity within individuals and communities. He urged women to take proactive steps regarding their health, such as early screening and vaccination, to facilitate early detection of potential issues.

Labasa Hospital is actively working to incorporate mental health services into its cancer care framework by providing counseling, establishing peer support groups, and offering psychological first aid. Additionally, the hospital is training healthcare workers to better recognize and address emotional distress in cancer patients, thereby ensuring timely support and care.

The collaborative efforts to enhance mental health support within cancer care represent a hopeful progression toward improving patient outcomes. Increasing awareness and proactive measures in mental health not only empower patients but also provide necessary resources for healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to a more holistic approach to cancer treatment in Fiji.
