There have been no discussions regarding potential rewards for the men’s netball team following their remarkable victory at the Men’s Nations Cup in Singapore earlier this month. This update was provided by Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru.
In a thrilling final match, the men’s team triumphed over the Australian Under-20 team with a score of 55-54, securing the prestigious Merlion Cup at the Jurong East Sports Complex. Minister Saukuru expressed gratitude for their historic achievement, stating, “We wish to thank them for winning their first international tournament. I think we should thank them as a nation – our sports people have really showed the world that we are the best.”
Currently, there are no plans for special incentives or rewards beyond what is typically offered to teams competing at the World Cup and Olympic levels. Saukuru noted, “We’ll have to meet internally and we’ll see how it goes. So far we only have been giving it to those at the world level, world cup, and Olympics.”
Throughout the week-long tournament, the Fiji men’s netball team displayed remarkable skills, only suffering a loss to the Australian Under-20 team in the round robin phase. They secured victories against England, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong, demonstrating their prowess and solidifying their status in international netball.
This victory not only highlights the talent present in the Fijian team but also sets the stage for future discussions on how to recognize and support local sports teams in their endeavors. The Minister’s acknowledgment of their success reflects a positive shift towards appreciating achievements at all levels of international competitions.
In conclusion, while immediate rewards may not be forthcoming, the recognition of such a significant victory can foster a culture of support for sports in Fiji, encouraging future generations to aspire for greatness in athletics.
