Men Defy Stereotypes in Caregiving with New Australian Training Program

Caregiving has traditionally been seen as a role primarily filled by women, but recent training in Fiji is challenging that stereotype. Among the 41 individuals who recently completed their training under the National Employment Centre programme were two men, Sanjay Narain Sharma, 47, and Alivereti Tagivetaua, 33. They were part of the third cohort to graduate with a Certificate III in Individual Support (Aging) during a ceremony at Calvary Temple last Friday.

This initiative is part of the Australian Aged Care Expansion (ACE) programme under the Pacific Australia Labour and Mobility (PALM) scheme. The theoretical component of the training is provided by Alphacrucis University College, recognized by the Fijian Higher Education Commission.

For Mr. Sharma, the journey into caregiving began while he was caring for his mother before her passing in 2022. He expressed a profound sense of fulfillment in helping others, stating, “There is nothing greater than the feeling of taking care of people.” He hopes to represent Fiji well through the opportunities that this training offers.

Mr. Tagivetaua faced his own challenges during the program, particularly with the practical training, which he described as a significant hurdle before graduation. He shared that he never had the chance to care for his grandparents, who passed away when he was young, and sees this as an opportunity to showcase the love he wishes he had shown them.

The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations emphasized that these trainees are now representatives of Fiji and encouraged them to conduct themselves appropriately as they embark on their new roles in Australia. Their official graduation is set for next June.

This initiative not only paves the way for more men to enter a traditionally female-dominated field but also enhances the support for the elderly in communities. The successful journey of Sharma and Tagivetaua serves as an inspiring example of how passion and compassion can drive career choices, ultimately benefiting others in need of care.
