The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat has voiced significant concern regarding the worsening conflict in the Middle East, advocating for swift and peaceful resolutions in accordance with international law. Acting Director General Ilan Kiloe conveyed the Secretariat’s alarm over the escalating tensions, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the principles established under the United Nations Charter.
Kiloe stated, “The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat expresses deep concern on the escalation of conflict in the Middle East and has called for a peaceful resolution.” He reiterated the necessity of peaceful dispute settlements, highlighting that the MSG is founded on core Melanesian values—such as dialogue, respect, and collective responsibility—that are in harmony with global norms.
These values are underscored in the ‘Efate Declaration on Mutual Respect, Responsibility, Cooperation, and Amity,’ which aligns with the broader Pacific vision of an ‘Ocean of Peace.’ This vision supports the ideal of the Pacific region as a bastion of peace and prosperity, where sustainable stability is reached through dialogue instead of confrontation.
Kiloe urged that any ongoing instability in the Middle East could yield global consequences, notably for vulnerable economies. He remarked, “The MSG Secretariat recognizes that prolonged instability in the Middle East will pose greater risks to global stability, with consequences extending far beyond the region that will disproportionately affect vulnerable economies.”
In his remarks, Kiloe also emphasized the Pacific’s unique identity and collective responsibility as stewards of the ocean. He likened the ocean, referred to as the ‘blue continent,’ to a lifeline that encompasses livelihood, passage, and spiritual connection. He explained, “Our leaders’ ‘Ocean of Peace’ vision is more than a metaphor; it is a commitment to protecting our people, our ocean, and the harmony it brings.”
The MSG Secretariat is adamant that peaceful dialogue must supersede violence, urging enhanced diplomatic engagement among the international community and regional partners. Kiloe called upon all to intensify their diplomatic efforts and support mediation initiatives, asserting multilateralism as the essential approach to achieving peace.
In a final reflection, Kiloe noted the Pacific’s role in providing stability amid global chaos. He stated, “It is crucial that our region remains a beacon of peace in light of pandemonium. We have a role to uphold human dignity, protecting the inalienable rights of all people and advocate for the protection of human lives. Let us keep our world peaceful and prosperous. We owe it to ourselves and our future generations.”
With this clarion call, the MSG Secretariat reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace and human dignity worldwide, hopeful that diplomacy and dialogue can pave the way for a more stable future.
