The NGO Coalition on Human Rights is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to address critical issues concerning Melanesia, particularly the situations in West Papua and Kanaky-New Caledonia. Following his recent reappointment as Chair of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), the coalition emphasizes the importance of adhering to the founding mission of the MSG, which champions independence and self-determination for all Melanesian peoples.

The coalition warns that Indonesia’s status as an associate member continues to pose challenges to this mission. They highlight concerns regarding Jakarta’s repressive actions in West Papua, which they believe have silenced voices seeking support from the MSG. They encourage Rabuka to advocate for West Papua and Kanaky at both the MSG-level and the Pacific Islands Forum, insisting that justice should not be compromised for diplomatic relations.

Echoing the sentiments of the late Father Walter Lini, the coalition reminds regional leaders that the liberation of all Melanesian peoples is integral to achieving true freedom across the region. Rabuka’s leadership during this pivotal time is seen as both a challenge and an opportunity to rejuvenate the MSG’s commitment to solidarity and justice.

Additionally, Rabuka’s diplomatic engagements suggest a nuanced approach to dealing with these sensitive issues, aiming to balance regional solidarity with the need for diplomatic relations. Such initiatives could potentially foster productive dialogue and cooperation among Melanesian nations, creating a more hopeful atmosphere for the pursuit of human rights and sovereignty.

The ongoing discourse signifies a renewed commitment towards collaboration among Melanesian states, underscoring the importance of unity in addressing shared challenges while maintaining respect for the sovereign rights of other nations.
