Hollywood actor Mel Gibson expressed intentions to enhance the airstrip on Vanuabalavu in Lau, allowing his private jet to land there more conveniently. According to an article in The Fiji Times dated December 3, 2004, Gibson shared this desire with former Cabinet minister Temo Sukanaivalu during his visit to the Lau Group.
Locals, including island residents Josefa Tapele and his sister Emele Wara, noted that Gibson aimed to extend and seal the airstrip to accommodate larger aircraft, including his own jet, for future trips without relying on charter flights.
However, Ratu Sakiusa Tuisolia, CEO of Airports Fiji Limited, mentioned that the company lacked the necessary funding for such upgrades. He suggested that if Gibson felt the need for the airstrip improvements, it would be appreciated if he could finance the project himself.
The actor arrived on an Air Fiji-chartered flight from Nadi Airport with his family and bodyguards. While Mr. Sukainaivalu later downplayed the meeting with Gibson as coincidental, it’s notable that Gibson’s visit was also tied to his interest in purchasing nearby Mago Island, a 5,411-acre property on the market for $15 million. The island has a complex history, having changed ownership multiple times since its conversion to Christianity in the 19th century.
In summary, while Mel Gibson’s plans to upgrade the airstrip met with logistical challenges due to funding issues, his interest in the region and Mago Island highlights a potential investment that could bring attention and economic benefits to Lau. The hope remains that collaboration could facilitate the airstrip improvement, ultimately enhancing accessibility to this stunning locale.
