Hollywood actor Mel Gibson expressed plans to upgrade the airstrip on Vanuabalavu in Lau, aiming to facilitate landings for his private jet, according to reports from The Fiji Times published in December 2004. Upon arrival in the Lau Group, Gibson conveyed his intentions to Temo Sukanaivalu, a former Cabinet minister.
Local islanders, Josefa Tapele and his sister Emele Wara, who witnessed Gibson’s landing, shared that the actor sought an extension and proper sealing of the airstrip to accommodate larger aircraft like his private jet on future visits, preferring this option over charter flights.
However, Ratu Sakiusa Tuisolia, the chief executive officer of Airports Fiji Ltd, mentioned that the company lacks the funds to undertake such upgrades. He expressed that it would be advantageous if Gibson covered the expense, illustrating the potential benefits a private investment could bring to the island’s infrastructure.
Gibson arrived with his family and bodyguards on a chartered Air Fiji flight, while reports about his intentions sparked some controversy. Sukanaivalu later clarified that his meeting with Gibson was merely coincidental. Additionally, Gibson was reportedly there to assess the potential purchase of Mago Island, which spans 5,411 acres and is listed at $15 million.
Mago Island carries historical significance, previously occupied by its native owners until the 19th century when they were displaced due to conversions to Christianity. Subsequent ownership of the island changed hands several times, highlighting its unique past and potential for development.
This interesting aspect of Mel Gibson’s connection to Fiji and the potential impact of infrastructure upgrades could bring more attention to the region, possibly leading to tourism and economic opportunities. Residents may look forward to the potential advancements such a project could usher in.
