A U.S. actor, recognized for portraying Jesus in the acclaimed series “The Chosen,” made a notable visit to the Vatican on Monday. Jonathan Roumie, alongside cast members Elizabeth Tabish, George Xanthis, and Vanessa Benavente, attended an event ahead of a special screening of an episode from the show’s upcoming fifth season, set to release internationally in July.

Roumie expressed his honor in visiting the Vatican and highlighted the significance of potentially meeting the newly elected pontiff, Leo XIV, saying, “The possibility of getting to meet the newest pontiff is extraordinary.” The Vatican screening showcased a pivotal episode that narrates significant events from Jesus’s life, including the Last Supper with his disciples.

Just before this visit, the cast concluded shooting for the sixth season of the show, which will depict the crucifixion; much of this was filmed in the ancient town of Matera, Italy. This location, rich in historical significance and known for its stone dwellings, served as a backdrop reminiscent of Jerusalem, as seen in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.”

Roumie and the team are scheduled to meet Pope Leo XIV during the pope’s general audience in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday. This meeting marks a significant moment for both the cast and the broader audience of the series, as the portrayal of Jesus continues to resonate deeply within the global community, fostering discussions about faith and inclusion.

The visit emphasizes the ongoing relevance of Jesus’s teachings and narratives, particularly through modern storytelling like “The Chosen,” which aims to reflect historical biblical events and connect viewers to the deeper messages of compassion and understanding inherent in Jesus’s life. As anticipation builds for the next season, the commitment of the cast and crew to their roles and stories remains a source of inspiration for many.
