Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old leader from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making waves at Everett High School in Washington, U.S., where she serves as Associated Student Body (ASB) president. With her family connections to Nasavu Village in Deuba, Deborah’s role as a Fijian student leader is a significant source of pride for her family, who reside in Fiji while she lives with her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S.
Deborah’s journey to leadership was inspired by encouragement from her peers and teachers. Reflecting on her election victory on February 29, she expressed surprise at the impact she had on her school community, stating, “I gained majority of votes… Winning with the biggest number of votes brought me so much joy and nervousness, but I realised that the Lord has a plan for me in this life.” Though born in the U.S., she proudly identifies as a daughter of Tailevu.
Deborah has been attending Everett High School since 2021 and was elected as its student body president on September 4. Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, described her as a cheerful and loving child who aims to bring unity and happiness among her peers. A talented singer, Deborah has performed the American National Anthem at various school events and has been recognized for her contributions in sports as a member of the volleyball and football teams.
In her role, Deborah recently attended a leadership camp in Mt Adams, where 500 students gathered for training without access to phones or gadgets. She described the experience as transformative, noting, “The next six days were going to be the best of my life. From learning about the eight essentials to creating connections that I know for a fact will last a lifetime.”
Additionally, she was recognized as one of the three Rotary Club of Everett Student of the Month honorees for October. Her teachers praised her leadership and kindness, with one stating, “Deborah leads with love… Her light shines bright and everyone near her wants to be closer to her.”
When sharing advice for young people, Deborah emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals and relying on prayer for joy. She stated, “Know that there are people around you who will support you and also tear you down. Lean on those who are your supporters in moments of need but also lean on the Father!”
