Tony Chan, a 24-year-old medical student, recently celebrated significant achievements at the 2024 University of Fiji Graduation ceremony held at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka. Chan was awarded five medals, including the prestigious titles of UniFiji Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine, Outstanding Student in Paediatrics, and Outstanding Student in Community Health and Family Service. He was also one of only two students to receive a gold medal award for 2024 and earned the Vice-Chancellor Award.
Reflecting on his journey, Chan acknowledged the challenges he faced, particularly being away from his family during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support and encouragement he received from his family, classmates, and educators, especially Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete. “Their words of encouragement and support played a crucial role in my success, and my schoolmates stood by me throughout these six years,” he shared.
Surprised yet humbled by his multiple awards, Chan attributed his accomplishments to the determination his educators recognized in him and credited his parents as his primary mentors. He remarked that the medals and certificates he earned would open numerous opportunities in the medical field, highlighting the importance of perseverance and support in overcoming adversity.
This inspiring story of determination and achievement serves as a reminder of the impactful role encouragement from loved ones and mentors plays in reaching one’s goals. With such a bright future ahead, Chan is poised to contribute meaningfully to healthcare, demonstrating that hard work and support can lead to remarkable success.
