Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old leader, is committed to positively influencing her school and community. Residing in Namata Village, Tailevu, she is connected to Nasavu Village in Deuba and currently serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington, USA.

With a student enrollment of 1,606 from Grades 9 to 12, Deborah’s role as a Fijian student leader brings great pride to her family, who live in Fiji while she is cared for by her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S.

“When I was running for the position, I was encouraged by many students and teachers,” said Deborah. “Before I contested for the position, I didn’t realize the impact I had, but when I learned on February 29 that I won, it became clear to me. I received the majority of votes, and winning brought me both joy and nervousness, making me realize the Lord has a plan for me.”

Although born in the U.S., Deborah is proud of her Fijian roots and identifies as a daughter of Tailevu. Last month, on September 4, she was elected president of the Everett High School student body, having attended the school since Year 9 in 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes Deborah as a cheerful and confident child. “As her mom, I always knew her to be a loving girl. She didn’t want to see any child sad and was known as a peacemaker,” Ms. Gasaucalayawa noted. “Deborah is talented and has sung the American National Anthem at various school events, proving to be an honor for her.”

Recently, Deborah and her fellow student body officials participated in a leadership camp organized by the school district at Mt Adams, where nearly 500 students from different schools were trained for their roles. Deborah described the experience as transformative. “Initially, I was terrified of meeting new people, but the next six days became some of the best of my life,” she shared. “The camp taught me to embrace life’s discomforts and to lead with influence.”

In addition, Deborah was recognized as one of the three Rotary Club of Everett Student of the Month recipients for October. The Rotary Club honors outstanding high school students in Everett each month, celebrating their accomplishments and potential.

One teacher remarked, “Deborah leads with love. As ASB president and president of the Pacific Islanders Club, she is kind, accepting, and positive. Her light shines bright, attracting those around her.” The ASB Advisor added, “Deborah is the only ASB President in over 15 years who receives spontaneous applause and cheers from her peers whenever she is introduced, reflecting how grateful her fellow students are to know her.”

When asked about the advice she would give to young people, Deborah emphasized, “Know that there are people who will support you and those who may not. Lean on your supporters in tough times and turn to the Father; pray for joy each day, and you will notice a difference that others will too.”
