Meet the Holistic Advocate of Health at the 2023 Hibiscus Festival

Shyla Prasad, representing the Ministry of Health at this year’s Hibiscus Festival, emphasizes that true wealth is represented by happiness, health, and peace of mind. Committed to promoting healthcare, Shyla focuses on vital issues such as HIV and AIDS, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and mental health.

A Medical Laboratory Scientist with deep interests in both healthcare and animal welfare, Shyla was born in Labasa and raised in Lautoka, where she attended Natabua High School. She always dreamed of pursuing her education in Suva, a goal she achieved when her family relocated to the capital so she could earn a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree from the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences.

With three years of professional experience at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), she is proud to represent her employer at the Miss Hibiscus pageant. Shyla expressed her growing affection for Suva, feeling privileged to work in Fiji’s largest and historically significant hospital, which is celebrating its 101st anniversary this year. The hospital honors Fijians who served in World War I, adding to its historical relevance for her.

Outside her medical profession, Shyla enjoys sports, traveling, and helping animals. Her hobbies include fishing, reading, and participating in various sports, along with being actively involved in volunteer work. She has taken part in outreach programs organized by the Sai Prema Foundation at the Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre and has shown dedication to the care and adoption of stray animals. Shyla aspires to establish her own animal shelter in the future.

She is one of ten contestants competing for the title at the 68th annual Hibiscus Festival, set to take place at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7. This year’s festival, supported by FMF and Vodafone as Gold Sponsors, promises to be an unforgettable event highlighting the talents and advocacy of Fiji’s best.
