Alumeci Davu, a 23-year-old senior barista at McDonald’s and a Bachelor of Medical Health Science student at the University of Fiji, is competing in the Miss LJSS title at the FMF Bula Festival. The festival kicked off last Saturday at Koroivolu Park in Nadi, with the crowning ceremony scheduled for this Saturday night.
Hailing from Lovoci, Nadi, with family ties to Daliconi in Vanuabalavu, Lau, Davu’s entry into the competition surprised her. She was approached by the festival director, an acquaintance from her church, which led her to participate despite initial nerves.
Davu has taken annual leave from work to balance her studies and festival commitments; she has kept her lecturers informed about her situation. She plans to utilize her platform at the festival to focus on themes of compassion-driven charity, especially the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in aiding communities after disasters or epidemics.
“My goal is to inform everyone about the tremendous work these NGOs do, especially in tough times, and to help them showcase their compassionate efforts,” she expressed.
In addition, Davu praised her fellow contestants, acknowledging their youthful enthusiasm and willingness to learn. She noted that she has developed friendships with them and appreciated the lessons they have shared.
The commitment to social causes among contestants is becoming increasingly prominent at the FMF Bula Festival, as seen with other participants advocating for health awareness, mental health, and environmental issues. The festival serves as a vibrant celebration of community spirit and cultural identity, offering young leaders the opportunity to inspire positive change.
With this trend ongoing, the festival promises a hopeful event focused on unity and advocacy, showcasing the potential of youth to contribute to social betterment in Fiji.
