Shyla Prasad, representing the Ministry of Health at this year’s Hibiscus Festival, emphasizes that true wealth lies in happiness, health, and peace of mind. She is committed to raising awareness about healthcare issues, particularly focusing on HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and mental health.
As a dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist, Shyla, who hails from Labasa and grew up in Lautoka, has long aspired to further her education in Suva, a goal she achieved by pursuing a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science at the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences after moving with her family to the capital.
With three years of experience at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), she feels honored to represent her workplace on the Miss Hibiscus platform. Shyla expressed her growing affection for Suva, especially as she works in Fiji’s largest historical hospital, which celebrates its 101st anniversary this year, built in honor of Fijians who served in World War I.
Apart from her medical career, Shyla is passionate about sports, travel, and animals. Her hobbies include fishing, reading, and engaging in various sports activities. She is actively involved in volunteer work through outreach programs with the Sai Prema Foundation at the Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre and has dedicated efforts to the care and adoption of stray animals, aiming to open her own animal shelter in the future.
Shyla is among ten contestants competing for the title during the 68th Hibiscus Festival, scheduled from August 31 to September 7 at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre. With FMF and Vodafone as Gold Sponsors, this year’s festival promises to be a remarkable celebration showcasing the talents and advocacy of Fiji’s finest.
