Nehemiah Elder, a remarkable 15-year-old weightlifter from Tunuloa in Cakaudrove, is making extraordinary strides in the sport both at local and international levels. With five international competitions under his belt, Elder has already established a name for himself, showcasing his talent at events such as the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in India, and the 2023 Oceania Championships in Samoa.
Elder’s achievements include winning a silver medal in India, setting impressive records in Auckland with a new Oceania Youth record for the snatch at 125kg, and equaling the clean and jerk record at 137kg. He has also clinched gold medals in the Youth snatch and Oceania Junior category, and was honored as the Best Male Youth Lifter at the Auckland event. His commendable performance continued in Suva, where he garnered two golds in the junior and youth categories and a silver in the senior category, alongside a new Commonwealth Youth record in the snatch, lifting 141kg.
His journey in weightlifting was spurred by the encouragement of his father, Henry Elder, who is also the head coach of Weightlifting Fiji. Nehemiah reflected on his early days, noting how his father saw his potential and guided him towards weightlifting as a serious career path. Starting at a young age, he was drawn to fitness activities, progressing to weightlifting by the age of 13.
While excelling in his sport, Nehemiah maintains a grounded attitude, thanks to his father’s guidance. Henry Elder reinforces the importance of humility and respect, reminding Nehemiah that great achievements can come to an end at any time. This father-son bond not only strengthens their relationship but keeps Nehemiah focused and motivated.
The emotional dynamics of their relationship are not lost on either of them, as they strategize to prepare Nehemiah for competitions even in his father’s absence. Nehemiah is also inspired by fellow lifters, such as Daniel Shaw and Jim and Taniela Rainibogi, as they foster a supportive environment that encourages him to excel.
Nehemiah’s standout moment from 2024 was the Commonwealth Championship held in Fiji, where he earned a silver in the senior category amidst the support of family and friends. Looking to the future, he aspires to perform at the World Youth Championships in 2025, aiming to make a name for Fiji on the global stage while honoring his faith.
